Antlion Drags Beetle Down
Posted by:

Occurred on March 2, 2019 / Boca Raton, Florida, USA Info from Licensor: "A few of my friends and I were out field herping in the sand dune field near my house when we came across a small cone-shaped divot in the sand. As we crouched down to take a closer look, we found a beetle attempting to escape the hole. An antlion in the center of the hole then grabbed the beetle in its large jaws, dragging it down under the sand to be consumed. Though I have seen this predatory behavior with antlions in the past, this was my first time catching it on camera! Antlions are the larva of a species of fly that just so happens to be extremely well-adapted predators."
